Franz Josef Travel Guide

Franz Josef is an open air active community with an option to explore the famous glacier to suit all types. From full or half day hikes to ice climbing or heli hikes you will find it hard to visit and not get in on the action.

Seeing the glacier from above is another popular activity with scenic flights, helicopter rides and the iconic Franz Josef Skydive, considered by some as the 2nd best skydive in the world.

Kia Ora everyone! For those of you not familiar with the term Kia Ora, a simple Hello will do! Here in New Zealand we are lucky enough to have a few thousand glaciers darted around the country that are compressing loads of ice year in and year out. If you are travelling by campervan, car, bus, bike - you will be introduced to some amazing picturesque view points along your chosen route. No matter which way you decide to travel, you are highly likely to meet a glacier at some point!

New Zealand is synonymous with 'adventure', and adrenaline junkies flock here from around the world. So it's only fitting that we lead the way in extreme sports. In a little town called Franz Josef, on the West Coast, a small team of skydivers are doing just that.

Nestled between New Zealand’s highest mountains, the Tasman Sea, stunning temperate rainforest, glowing glaciers, mirror lakes and braided river beds, Franz Josef Glacier has been described as one of the most beautiful places on earth. For this reason and many others, the region was included in the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area.

Franz Josef the town is a little piece of perfect. Home to a number of cosy retreats and motels, excellent restaurants and bars, a lively yet respectful atmosphere all with an important glacier looking down on them, without which Franz Josef would cease to exist.
